Vercel for AI Apps: Deploy, Scale, and the AI SDK

Why this matters

If you vibecoded an app in Lovable, Bolt, or Cursor, the deploy target your AI defaulted to is almost certainly Vercel. Good default — but the 2026 Vercel reality is different from the one most LLM training data describes. Edge Functions are out. Fluid Compute is in. There's a unified AI Gateway. vercel.ts replaces vercel.json. If you skim the docs while half-listening, you'll wire your AI app the wrong way.

Vercel for AI apps in 2026 is genuinely good once you know which knobs to turn. This is the short version.

The setup

You'll need:

  • A Vercel account, the project linked (vercel link).
  • Node.js 24 LTS locally (Node 18 is deprecated as of 2026).
  • The Vercel CLI installed: npm i -g vercel@latest.
  • An AI provider — but you'll route it through the Gateway, not its native SDK.

Step 1: Pick the right runtime — Fluid Compute

Fluid Compute is now the default Vercel function runtime. It runs full Node.js, reuses instances across concurrent requests (low cold-start cost), supports graceful shutdown, and has a 300-second default timeout on every plan. It runs in the same regions as Edge Functions, at the same price.

Do NOT reach for export const runtime = 'edge'. Edge Functions are no longer recommended — compatibility with Node libraries is the headache, and Fluid Compute solves the cold-start argument. Routing Middleware now also runs on Fluid Compute under the hood.

The 300-second default timeout means you can host long-running AI agents in plain function routes. No background-job framework needed for most vibecoder use cases — just stream the response.

Step 2: Wire AI calls through the AI Gateway, not provider SDKs

Vercel's AI Gateway has been GA since August 2025. It's a unified API across providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI, etc.) with built-in fallbacks, observability, and zero data retention. For AI SDK v6 usage on Vercel, prefer plain "provider/model" strings via the Gateway over installing @ai-sdk/anthropic or @ai-sdk/openai directly.

Why this matters for vibecoders:

  • Swap models without code changes — flip the string.
  • Built-in failover if one provider has an outage.
  • One bill, observability across providers.
  • No provider key in your env when you use OIDC tokens.

Step 3: Manage env + previews with vercel.ts and vercel env

vercel.ts replaces vercel.json — you get TypeScript, conditional logic, and access to env vars at config time. Install @vercel/config and export a typed config:

For env vars: stop pasting into the dashboard. Use vercel env pull .env.local to mirror prod into your local .env.local, and vercel env add to push new keys without leaving the terminal.

Step 4: Don't reach for Vercel Postgres or KV — they're gone

Vercel Postgres and Vercel KV are no longer offered. Instead, install the database from the Vercel Marketplace — Neon for Postgres, Upstash for Redis, or Supabase if you want auth and Postgres in one place. The Marketplace integrations auto-provision env vars, so the wiring is one click.

For file storage, Vercel Blob now supports both public and private buckets — use Blob if your files are app-owned, S3 (via Marketplace) if you want region/control.

Common mistakes

  • Setting runtime: 'edge' because tutorials told you to — In 2026, that's a downgrade. Default Fluid Compute is faster on cold start and gives you full Node.
  • Hardcoding @ai-sdk/anthropic — Locks you to one provider. The Gateway gives you fallbacks and a model swap for free.
  • Storing secrets in vercel.json — Use vercel env. Even better, use OIDC tokens for the Gateway and skip provider keys entirely.
  • Assuming Vercel Postgres still exists — It doesn't. Install Neon or Supabase from the Marketplace.
  • Manually triggering deploys — Just push the branch. Preview URLs are automatic; promote to prod with vercel --prod or the dashboard.
